Since fifteenth century the picture frame goes inside: painted or occupied by objects and figures, it becomes integral part of that. In this Memling’s work the veil of headdress conceals a part of frame and allows the portrayed subject to penetrate into an external dimension – the living one. Sometimes the attempt to pass a limit emphasizes the fatality of it. © Graziano Spinosi
